Monthly Archives: November 2011
Last night I wrote my 100th blog post without actually realising it and in two days Through Newb Eyes will be 1 Year old. Obligatory stats time. Also competition.
100 posts across one year.
That averages 2.3 posts a week.
261 total comments averages to about 2.6 comments a post!
38,863 Unique views at the time of writing, with the most popular post being my Winter Expansion ‘Crucible’ Features list at a whopping 16,000 views. I put this down to initially linking it on the r/EVE subreddit on Reddit.com.
November 2011 has accounted for 50% of my total views. Getting linked on an EVE Online dev blog helped with that too.
The largest number of referral links came from Reddit.com, followed by people coming from The Altruist, narrowly followed by Twitter with 1,337 referrals.
The most clicked on link? That’d be to my gallery of some of the new V3′d ship hulls here.
So all I can say is thank you to everyone who reads, comments and recommends.
But that’s not all
A year deserves something special, does it not? 100 Posts something else? I’m sure it does.
So I’m running my first EVE competition. It’s not going to be big, I don’t have all the ISK in the world.
I will be awarding 120 Million ISK as a First Prize, and a Navy Augororororororor I have sitting in the Autaris System in Lonetrek (hilarious fit and all) as a runner up for this competition. Trimark rigged, of course.
The competition? It’s simple enough. I want you to link me your favourite piece of EVE fan work with a reason why you feel this is favourable.
That’s blogs, screenshots, songs, videos, concept art and whatever you can think of EVE related.
In 3 days I will pick my favourite one listed and award the prizes. It’s that simple.
To enter you have two options – comment on this post or send me an EVE-Mail at tgl3. I’d use twitter, but it could get swamped by other replies.
Don’t forget your reasons why, and specify your character name so I know who to send the prizes to!
Edit: If two or more people post the same fan work, the one with the best reasoning wins out!
With Crucible deployed, a much requested feature has reared its head: Implants on podmails.
So I present to you this beauty.
Oh capsuleers of EVE, you never fail to amuse.
Today we see space get a whole lot prettier. Well, hopefully.
The first ship on my “to buy” list once I get out of WH space for some shopping is the Talos, simply because lolblasterspwnage though I lack T2 large hybrids. This should see fast response action in the Wormhole, able to go toe-to-toe in terms of raw firepower with Battleships in a small gang engagement while holding the maneuverability to GTFO if needed.
The second will be the Oracle for WH POS seiges, thanks to it’s cap stability with BC5 and lower mass than that of, say, an Abaddon. This could also see action in WH skirmishes, it’s lasers able to dish out extreme damage at an amazing variety of ranges.
The third will be the Catalyst. After testing new fits on Sisi, I’ve settled on a low-tank high-dps fit that, when fit with Null, should make short work of any hostile Bombers and Interceptors as well as being able to switch for Antimatter to do impressive damage against larger vessels.
Cloaked ships not decloaking each other is a nice buff, making our Bombing runs against wormholes a lot easier.
The removal of Jump API in Wormholes makes logical sense but still hurts our intel tools somewhat fierce. Before Crucible, it was possible to see how many Jumps people made into and out of a Wormhole, which was critical information in determining WH activity. Now we shall have to make do without, but rest easy in the knowledge that others are in the same position.
Corp Bookmarks are an amazing change but I’m still in the Wormhole Engineers “Testing and Evaluation” corp so I can’t share BMs this way to the main Wormhole Engineers corp, which is a slight annoyance. Alliance BMs next, CCP?
I can’t wait for TQ to go live, and many others feel the same. I just hope CCP take this momentum and carry it through 2012.
P.S. Seismic Stan has done an awesome post over on his blog that showcases some of the model and texture changes in Crucible.
Saturday night saw the latest RvB Ganked Night, which welped (twice) into a much more organised (and less drunk) Northern Coalition. gang.
But that’s not the best part of the night. Oh no.
The evening began with myself cruising the Lowsec systems near RvB space in my Pilgrim, looking for targets. However, I noticed a message in the “rvb spooning” channel from a friend of mine;
[ 2011.11.26 19:09:31 ] Cameron Zero > Two chimeras sitting on the nalvula gate in otsasai, lol
I decide to give them a miss, and kick about in Nalvula next door, watching a russian pilot get camped into a station and not shut up about it in local.
However, I notice a cyno is now up on the Otsasai gate, so I warp over and have a little look.
There’s a Manticore and Chimera 100km off the gate, the Manti having lit the cyno, along with a message in local:
[ 2011.11.26 19:23:43 ] Kronos Dardanos > is there a way to shut down cyno field faster
I put it down to a nice attempt to “play dumb” and bait someone, but inspection of the pilots reveal an Indy corp with only 13 members and no combat record to speak of. Could it be too good to be true? Surely not? He’s sitting there stationary!
I light up the r-v-b channel to see if we can get a leeroy fleet going.
[ 2011.11.26 19:27:13 ] tgl3 > There’s a lone carrier in Nalvula, 150km off a gate…
[ 2011.11.26 19:27:19 ] tgl3 > I was wondering if it’d be fun to leeroy
[ 2011.11.26 19:28:00 ] Graeme Rowney > no one is that retarded with a carrier pilot
[ 2011.11.26 19:28:07 ] Captain Joxxifer > Then again allways bet on stupid
Some scouts from RvB head over to confirm and check for themselves, but the cyno drops and both ships warp off as they arrive. Bollocks!
A Red pilot hangs round with me in system while we wait to see if either pilot resurfaces anywhere, when I spot the Cyno alt in a Noctis.
I check. I double check. It’s the same guy, and the carrier pilot is still in system and hasn’t docked.
Is he… missioning? Surely not??
[ 2011.11.26 19:49:13 ] tgl3 > Anyone here got a prober?
[ 2011.11.26 19:49:22 ] tgl3 > Might have a carrier missioning in Nalvula Solar System
[ 2011.11.26 19:49:32 ] tgl3 > His cyno alt was just seen in a noctis
[ 2011.11.26 19:50:13 ] Sir Buzz Lightyear > uuh
[ 2011.11.26 19:50:36 ] tgl3 > Buzz!
[ 2011.11.26 19:50:38 ] tgl3 > Come probe!
[ 2011.11.26 19:50:45 ] Sir Buzz Lightyear > yep
[ 2011.11.26 19:50:49 ] Sir Buzz Lightyear > few jumps away
Alrighty. Mangala is already forming the Ganked fleet up, scheduled to start in an hour, so we have a potential fleet if we need it.
Time passes as Patrick brings Buzz over to the system and starts probing.
Even more time passes, with some idle chatter in r-v-b about how unlikely this is.
[ 2011.11.26 20:05:20 ] Sir Buzz Lightyear > i have the carrier scanned down
[ 2011.11.26 20:05:28 ] tgl3 > really?
[ 2011.11.26 20:05:40 ] Sir Buzz Lightyear > yes sir
[ 2011.11.26 20:05:46 ] tgl3 > You’re not fucking with me?
[ 2011.11.26 20:06:01 ] tgl3 > Please dont fuck with me.
[ 2011.11.26 20:06:03 ] Sir Buzz Lightyear > nope
[ 2011.11.26 20:06:04 ] Sir Buzz Lightyear >
RAISE THE ALARM BELLS WE HAVE HILARITY.
Fleet invites go up, comms are joined and r-v-b is notified. The fleet is to assemble next door in Vuorrassi and myself and Buzz will act as initial cloaky scrams in case he’s bad enough to be warp core stab fit.
However, I noticed the Chimera is now on station, and the Noctis has undocked.
[ 2011.11.26 20:08:42 ] tgl3 > chimera landed station
[ 2011.11.26 20:09:28 ] Patrick Kasper > no
[ 2011.11.26 20:09:30 ] Patrick Kasper > its still here
Erm, what? There’s two?
[ 2011.11.26 20:10:03 ] Sir Buzz Lightyear > Icon Industries
[ 2011.11.26 20:10:18 ] Sir Buzz Lightyear > noctis warped in
OH GOD THERE’S TWO MISSIONING CARRIERS
As a man who has never actually killed a carrier, this is srs bsns.
[ 2011.11.26 20:06:18 ] tgl3 > LOAD UP THE BATTLESHIPS
A few minutes pass as Buzz sorts out bookmarks for his main and the first Chimera warps back to the site!
We’re ready. I warp to Buzz, who is cloaked at the site, and Patrick fleetwarps the fleet in as they jump.
WHAM. I land, establish tackle on one Chimera as Buzz decloaks and tackles the other. The rest of the fleet lands in a blaze of firepower.
The Noctis EXPLODES first, as some gits shoot it before I remember to snag myself on it.
The first Chimera melts stupidly quick and follows suit, not surprising given the fit!
The second Chimera melts even faster. Must be the lack of Damage Control II or something. Boom.
Gudfights are had all round, and then one of the Chimeras pods warps back (it appears he logged while under fire and logged back in in the pod) so someone sacrifices their sec status for that too.
AND THEN WE RESCUED THE DAMSEL
[ 2011.11.26 20:31:03 ] Klapen > The Damsel he cant finish his mission now!
[ 2011.11.26 20:31:06 ] Klapen > i has the girl!
[ 2011.11.26 20:31:11 ] Judontknowme > lol
[ 2011.11.26 20:31:15 ] Klapen > MWHAHAHAH
[ 2011.11.26 20:31:17 ] Thecla Elarik > \o/
[ 2011.11.26 20:31:19 ] Judontknowme > 2 carriers to save a damsel
[ 2011.11.26 20:31:35 ] Tubrug1 > fucking hell thats hillarious
A level 4 mission with 2 Chimeras. Oh dear.
Oh, and then we got a video of the whole thing.
And then something something Ganked night.
EVE Players were treated to a surprise announcement that a fleet of CCP Devs would be “invading” New Eden with their own fleet.
Channels lit up as people desperately searched for the CCP fleet, but it did not appear till around 12 hours after the initial Scope announcement.
A public fleet started forming up, and a Livestream from CCP showed us their fleet location and destination. They were in Lowsec and heading for… Tama? Really CCP?
Fortunately Tama was a mere 5 jumps from our now 150-man strong public fleet, but on the way we got the first screenshot of their fleet.
I was expecting 40 mixed ships. Oh no. Not even close.
Our fleet was the first to arrive in Tama, and settled on the Kedama gate and waited.
The gate flashes after a mere 5 minutes of waiting. Local spikes. Fun time.
Primaries are called and the mayhem begins. The CCP fleet has more logistics and much more powerful ships, but we have numbers. This could be close.
So we open fire on the flashy Devs.
A few long minutes into the fight, I notice a yellow wreck next to me, belonging to a CCP dev who exploded. I pilot my Vexor over and find… erm… wow.
OH GOD CCP HAS SHINY SHINY IN THEIR CARGO OH THE POSSIBILITIES
I decide not to inform my fleet, but instead advertise to the r-v-b channel as well as my wormhole channel. MEGA LEWTZ GUYZ.
I continue plinking away at targets until I start getting shot at. With a PLEX still in my hold. NOPE NOPE NOPE. I burn away from the offending Damnation and warp away back to the highsec gate.
I drop off the loot and warp back, and we’re not doing very well.
The CCP fleet is too much, and their logistics are keeping a lot of their ships alive. Our rag tag
pubbie public fleet can’t keep this up. We retreat back to highsec for a regroup.
As we’re doing so, cries go up on comms of a cyno being lit in Tama, dropping a PL cap fleet onto the fight. To boot, a Goon friend of mine reports his alliance have arrived with a subcap fleet, and Gents have shown up with a BS gang.
It’s all kicking off now, so we leeroy the remnants of our fleet and charge in the name of good fights, good lewtz and explosions.
We land on field and hell is going on. PL have dropped titans and motherships, so CCP are burning fast. I nab 2 more PLEX and some faction ammo and mods from some wrecks and GTFO. Comms calling has fallen apart anyways. The overview lag at this point is crushing and I have to spent a good 3 minutes clicking around to get a decent bracket set-up so I can, you know, move.
I drop off my second run of loot, and head back to survey the battle. CCP are reported as dead, goons and other forces have fled the field. It’s apparently PL-ville now. A Uni gang waiting on the Tama gate doesn’t seem to want to go in, so I jump in and join the small skirmishes on the far side. Eventually, I warp back to the battleground, to be met with…
I stick about on gate, checking wrecks untill I get taken to half structure by a Titan, so I jump out.
I jump back in, get insta-pointed by a loki and die.
Seriously epic fun (plus about 2bil isk of loot), though I have one complaint.
It’s not with CCP, for bringing the epic brawl.
It’s not with PL, for dropping 10 titans.
It’s not with my FC, who stumbled with target calls. (Edit: Grideris actually did an OK job considering people were trying to undercut him with target calls…)
It’s with the high-sec guys who bitched on comms afterwards about losing ships. Oh. My. God.
Why the everlasting crap do you bring a shiny ship into lowsec the day the log-in screen states “Don’t fly what you can’t afford to lose, especially today” and then proceed to bitch for 5 minutes afterwards about how long it’ll take to grind the isk back to buy a new one.
OH MY WORD WHAT THE FUCK
Also, we lit up the map.
Finally, the battle reports are fucked all over, but here!
P.S. My final loot count
